See Picks & Statistics For The GameSunday morning brings us an incredible showdown on the pitch across the pond as Manchester City hosts Liverpool for some English Premier League action. Liverpool is on top of the league with 61 total points through 26 games, with an 8 point lead over Arsenal in 2nd place. Manchester City sits at 4th currently with 44 total points, 3 behind Nottingham Forest and just one ahead of AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea, not to mention Villa and Newcastle are on their heels as well.
City also has a fairly severe point penalty looming over their heads, and after getting knocked out of this year’s UEFA Champions League competition this week, their sole focus can turn towards stacking on points on the EPL table. While Liverpool do have a comfortable cushion over the Gunners, they’ll bring their A-game against City on the road.
But can they pull off a tough road win against a Manchester City team who has absolutely nothing to lose?

Manchester City Host Liverpool Needing a Win

Will Manchester City compete on the road against Arsenal?
Like I said, Manchester City is officially out of the UEFA Champions League this season. They are still trying to defend their EPL Title, but hopes of doing so are dwindling each week. A win could totally resurrect their season, but a loss could put it in the grave officially. Liverpool has drawn each of their last two matches on the road, both by a score of 2-2, but this is certainly one they have had circled on the calendar.
Liverpool beat City at home, 2-nil in early December. Today they face them again, and Manchester City might be even more beat up than usual. Their back line is already dealing with plenty of injures, and the midfield will be missing Rodri till next season. But now striker Erling Haaland, who suffered a knee injury this week in the UCL, may not be available on Sunday. This would cause the Man City attack to take a huge hit in terms of fire power, and would cause my lean to shift even more towards the visiting Reds.
City’s manager, Pep Guardiola did not completely rule out Haaland in this match, but if the Norwegian sits this one out, I do not see a world where the home team wins.

You don’t often get to bet Liverpool for plus money, but when you get that chance, take the bet and run.
Liverpool has been the best team in European football this season, not just in England, but all across Europe. They lead the EPL table by 9 points with 12 matches left (so there’s still plenty of work to do), but also finished on Top of the UCL table for the league phase part of the competition.
This team is rock solid on every level of personnel, and even if Haaland suits up (doubtful), the visitors know they are more than capable of taking down their hosts. The days of Manchester City running European football are over with. New teams are taking over across the country and continent, and this year, that team is Liverpool.
Liverpool has lost only three times all year long. They were taken down by Nottingham Forest on September 14th, losing 1-nil at home, and more recently lost to PSV in the UEFA Champions League (meaningless game for Liverpool), and to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup. I’m not reading into those losses because this is a match the Reds care much more about. As simple as the handicap may be, Manchester’s entire team is dealing with injuries and have not been up to the usual standard. Meanwhile Liverpool is playing out of their minds and aren’t offered at plus money very often.
Even on the road, give me Liverpool to find a way to win.
