Betis hoping to finish well
The 2021/22 season will be remembered as a good one by followers of Real Betis, with the team performing better than many expected. They started the week fifth in the table with stats of 17 wins and seven draws against ten defeats, scoring 56 goals and conceding 38.
That has earned them 58 points which is just three shy of Atletico Madrid and the top four with both sides having the same goal difference.
Despite their lofty position and chances of playing in Europe’s elite next season, Betis are without a win in their last three La Liga outings, picking up two of the last nine points available to them.
That has allowed teams behind to close the distance, and if Betis don’t turn things around quickly and arrest that dip in form, they could undo all their great work from this campaign. Get back to winning ways, though, and they could end as a Champions League side.
The last three results from Real’s season read draw-lose-draw, with their most recent outing producing a goalless finish away to Getafe on Monday.
That was a game they would have expected to win, and they created enough chances to score a winning goal, but the players look like they are beginning to feel the strains of a season spent chasing glory. There are a few tired legs in the camp, but one final big push is required.
The players did give fans something to cheer late last month when winning the Spanish Copa Del Rey by beating Valencia on penalties.
It’s not every season Betis celebrate a trophy, and they were made to work hard for this piece of silverware with the game locked at 1-1 following 90 minutes and extra time, forcing the teams to penalties. Betis held their nerve in that lottery, winning 5-4.
Barca bounce back to form
To say Barcelona fans have endured a rollercoaster season would be a severe understatement. One of the biggest names in soccer lost Messi to PSG in the summer as they couldn’t afford to pay the Argentine’s wages and balance the books.
The club fell foul to many seasons of over-spending and flouting financial fair play rules and are now beginning to feel the pressure. They aren’t out of the woods yet, but they are moving in the right direction again.
Following a poor start to the season, we now find Barcelona back and contesting major places in La Liga. They start the week in second behind runaway leaders Real Madrid, and although they can’t win the title, they will want to secure a top-four finish and do it in style.
Ending second despite not being at full strength would serve as a warning shot to the rest of the competition, showing Barcelona are backfiring and will be better next season.
Their last five league results read win-lose-win-lose-win, meaning if that trend was to continue here, they will return to the Camp Nou empty-handed.
No one in the away dressing room will expect that to be the case, and Barca fans are confident their team has what it takes to finish the season on the front foot, putting together an extended run of good form.
They were last seen in action on the opening day of the month when scoring a home win over Mallorca. That victory was achieved thanks to goals from Depay and Busquets, with Raillo hitting a consolation for the beaten side.
