2026 Kentucky Derby Prop Bets: The Best Bets for Casual Fans

The 2026 Kentucky Derby goes off Saturday, May 2 at Churchill Downs. Like the Super Bowl the event offers plenty to wager on beyond the outcome of the race.

Last year, Betting News followers cashed generously when Sovereignty took an extremely public bathroom break stepping onto Churchill Downs dirt. We may not have had him crossing the wire first, but we felt like winners due to our on track defecation bet.

We're back to do it again. Here are the best 2026 Kentucky Derby prop bets for people who care more about vibes than pedigrees.

Find these props and updated prices at BetOnline.

Which Football Player Will Be Seen First: Aaron Rodgers +150

Monday Night Football, Bills vs Jets, Best Bets: Allen vs Aaron on ESPN cover

Aaron Rogers is the betting favorite to be seen on the NBC Kentucky Derby telecast

This is the layup of all 2026 Kentucky Derby prop bets. NBC pays a small fortune to broadcast the Derby, and they need to remind you, the casual viewer, that famous people are watching. Aaron Rodgers has been a Churchill Downs regular for years. You combine his need to be in the spotlight with his elevated status from the Pat MacAfee appearances and that makes him a deserving favorite to grab the attention of the production crew at NBC.

Will a Horse Poop on the Track: Yes +150

Did you really think we weren't going to run this one back? Twenty horses surrounded by 150,000 screaming fans. You are likely to cash this bet on a Tuesday at Finger Lakes. Add the fanfare of the Derby and the nervous energy of the horses and this one feels like a no-brainer once again.

One spot we are taking a stand this year is the near prop which requires the pre-race weight reduction to come from a certain post or from one of the top 3 finishers. Despite last year's winner being our winning horse last year, pooping on the track is generally a product of nervous energy. I want a cool, calm, and collected horse to be in the top 3. Avoid these sucker bets and up your units on the basic prop to make up the difference in price.

Will There Be a Triple Crown Champion: No -650

Triple Crown Horse Racing Betting Guide cover (2018 Triple Crown winner Justify during his Belmont Stakes win)

It's been 8 years since the last Triple Crown in horse racing.

This one feels like the easiest of all the props. There have been 2 Triple Crown winners since the 1970's. Both of those runners were deemed monsters coming into the race. This group of three year olds lacks the star power we saw with American Pharaoh and Justify. Not to mention we have a likely winner in Chief Wallabee. You may recall that Sovereignty for the same connections just skipped the Preakness all together. No reason to believe a situation like that wouldn't happen again.

Terrible price, but free money in this crop.

Winning Horse Starting Letter of Name: A-H -150

The horses I like in this year's Kentucky Derby: Chief Wallabee, Commandment, Danon Bourbon, Emerging Market, and Further Ado. You get -150 sure but you also get 5 top contenders. You'd be lucky to get that price on a favorite any other day of the week. Take the top half of the alphabet and hope that rail post for Renegade is as bad as bad as its been since Ferdinand in 1986

Winning Time in Seconds: Under 122.5 -120

The fastest 2 minutes in sports is a bit of a misnomer. Secretariat and Manarchos remain the only 2 horses to have actually run sub two minute races. In reality most races have been somewhere 2:02 and 2:04 on the clock making 122.5 a tough over under.

However, Churchill Downs is expected to have a rare cool dry forecast for Saturday. In the last 5 Kentucky Derby's run on dry tracks only Mystik Dan and Rich Strike have run the over. With all due respect to those animals they are 2 of the weaker Derby winners in recent vintage. If you think there an iota of talent in this group, the under is the play.

Saddlecloth of the Winner: Even -160

Since 2000, the split between odd and even saddlecloths is essentially 50/50, with a tiny lean toward odd numbers. So why bet Even? Because three of the four favorites this year — Commandment (6), Chief Wallabee (12), and Further Ado (18) — are all wearing even numbers. Renegade, Danon Bourbon, and Emerging Market do pose a threat, but when you combine the even top players with the possible chaos candidates, it is the evens for me in Derby 152.

Will the Jockey Celebrate at the Finish Line: No -200

American Pharoah wins the 2015 Kentucky Derby as Victor Espinosa celebrates

This one rewards anyone who has actually watched the end of a Kentucky Derby. The winning jockey almost never has time for a hands-up, fist-pump celebration at the wire. The Derby is too tight, too loud, and too close at the finish for the kind of choreographed celebration the prop is asking for. Mystik Dan's jockey in 2024 didn't know he won until they posted the photo. Sovereignty's jockey in 2025 was still riding hard at the wire.

Real celebrations happen in the winner's circle. At the actual finish line, the jockey is usually still tucked low unless the race is a blowout, which I don't see happening this year.

Final Word on the 2026 Kentucky Derby Prop Bets

The Derby is two minutes of beautiful chaos, and the 2026 Kentucky Derby prop bet menu is where casual fans can actually have an edge and frankly a good laugh. The serious handicappers are buried in speed figures. You're betting on whether a quarterback gets a camera shot and whether a horse experiences a digestive event. Both of these things are, in the long run, more predictable than which 3-year-old colt wins a 1¼-mile dirt race.
