Maryland Sports Betting Revenue Falls in August 2026

industry

Maryland sports betting handle increased in August 2026, but lower sportsbook hold reduced the state's revenue.

According to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) report, Maryland sportsbooks accepted $465.91 million in wagers during August. That figure represents a 7.3% increase from August 2025. However, stronger betting activity did not produce higher state revenue.

Instead, sportsbooks recorded a lower hold during the month. That decline significantly affected Maryland gambling revenue and state tax collections.

Maryland Sports Betting Handle Climbs 7.3%

August marked another strong month for Maryland's regulated betting market. Bettors wagered more than $465 million across mobile and retail sportsbooks.

Mobile betting continued to dominate the market by a substantial margin. The state's mobile sportsbooks generated $458.77 million in August handle, while retail operators recorded $7.14 million.

Mobile wagers therefore accounted for roughly 98.5% of Maryland's total August handle. Retail betting represented the remaining 1.5%.

The latest figures show how heavily Maryland's market depends on mobile wagering. They also highlight the importance of US online sportsbooks to the state's overall betting activity.

For comparison, Maryland sportsbooks handled approximately $434.2 million during August 2025. The latest figures therefore show continued year-over-year growth in wagering volume.

However, handle alone does not determine sportsbook revenue or state tax collections. Instead, the amount operators retain after paying winning wagers plays a crucial role.

Lower Sportsbook Hold Cuts Revenue

Maryland sportsbooks generated approximately $45.25 million in gross sports betting revenue during August. That produced a 9.7% statewide hold.

The result fell below the 12.1% hold recorded during August 2025. Consequently, operators retained a smaller percentage of the money wagered despite the higher handle.

Mobile sportsbooks generated $44.67 million in hold, compared with $586,702 for retail operators. Mobile betting also posted a 9.7% hold, while retail sportsbooks recorded an 8.2% hold.

That shift explains much of the difference between Maryland's betting activity and its revenue performance.

US online sportsbooks can experience significant monthly swings in hold based on betting outcomes. Maryland's August results provide another example of that volatility.

Maryland State Contribution Falls 22%

Maryland collected approximately $7.02 million from sports betting during August 2026. That represented a decline of roughly 22.4% from August 2025.

The result creates a notable contrast with the 7.3% increase in handle. Maryland therefore accepted more wagers while collecting considerably less from sports betting.

The difference stems from the relationship between sportsbook winnings and taxable revenue. Maryland recorded $35.23 million in taxable sports betting win during August.

The state's tax structure also differs between retail and mobile operators. Retail operators contribute 15% of taxable proceeds, while mobile operators contribute 20%.

Most Sports Betting Taxes Support Education

The August report also highlights where Maryland directs its sports betting tax revenue. Public education programs received $5.28 million from August's sports wagering contributions.

That money supports the Blueprint for Maryland's Future Fund, which finances public education initiatives.

Retail operators send 15% of taxable proceeds to the Blueprint Fund. Meanwhile, mobile operators send 15% to the Blueprint Fund and another 5% to the state's General Fund.

August therefore produced $5.28 million for the Blueprint Fund and $1.73 million for the General Fund.

Since Maryland launched sports wagering in December 2021, the Blueprint Fund has received approximately $288.73 million. The General Fund has received another $36.44 million.

Fiscal-Year Results Show Continued Growth

August also contributed to Maryland's fiscal-year 2027 sports betting totals. Through August, the state recorded approximately $962.31 million in handle.

That figure exceeded the roughly $798.30 million recorded during the comparable period of fiscal 2026. Nevertheless, state contributions remained lower during the current fiscal year.

The contrast again demonstrates the importance of sportsbook hold. Strong wagering volume can support market growth without producing equivalent growth in government revenue.

For Maryland gambling officials, future monthly reports will show whether August's weaker hold was temporary. Sportsbook results can change considerably depending on betting outcomes and major sporting events.

Maryland Market Delivers Mixed August Results

Maryland's August report ultimately delivered mixed results for the state's sports betting industry.

Handle rose substantially, confirming continued demand for regulated wagering. However, sportsbooks retained less from those wagers than they did one year earlier.

Therefore, the month's most important story is not simply Maryland's $465.91 million handle. Instead, it is the widening gap between betting volume and government revenue.

The MLGCA report shows that market growth does not automatically produce higher tax collections. For Maryland, August 2026 provided a clear example of how sportsbook hold can shape the state's financial results.

At the same time, the state's tax structure ensures that sports betting continues supporting public priorities. The Blueprint for Maryland's Future Fund remains the largest beneficiary of those contributions.
