Michigan's sports betting market delivered a strong July despite a decline in wagering volume. The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) reported the latest figures for the state's gambling industry.
The results also gave Michigan gambling operators a boost during the summer. In particular, the 2026 FIFA World Cup created additional betting opportunities across July. The tournament likely contributed to the market's stronger sportsbook performance.
Michigan Sports Betting Revenue Surges in July
Michigan sportsbooks generated $43.36 million in gross receipts during July. That figure increased from $40.1 million in June.
Adjusted gross receipts (AGR) reached $30.77 million, representing a 52.7% increase from June. Sports betting AGR also climbed 28.8% year over year.
The sharp revenue increase gave Michigan its strongest sportsbook hold of 2026. The market's hold reached roughly 8.7% during July. That figure shows how much of the money wagered on sportsbooks is retained as revenue.
It is important to distinguish gross receipts from adjusted gross receipts. Gross receipts totaled $43.36 million before applicable adjustments. Meanwhile, AGR reached $30.77 million after those adjustments. The MGCB uses AGR when calculating taxes and payments from online sports betting operators.
Operators paid approximately $2.1 million in state sports betting taxes and fees during July. Detroit's three casinos also generated $591,247 in online sports betting taxes and fees.
Michigan Sportsbook Handle Declines Despite Revenue Growth
Michigan sportsbooks accepted $355.2 million in online wagers during July. That represented a 3% decline from June's $366.1 million handle.
Despite that monthly decline, July's handle remained considerably stronger year over year. Wagering volume increased 25.6% compared with July 2025. Therefore, the market continued to show underlying growth despite seasonal fluctuations.
The higher hold ultimately drove the monthly revenue surge. Sportsbooks kept a larger share of wagers than they did during June. As a result, operators generated significantly more AGR from a smaller handle.
This trend also shows why handle alone cannot determine sportsbook performance. A larger betting volume does not always produce greater operator revenue. Instead, results depend heavily on wager outcomes and the resulting hold.
Key Factors Boost Michigan Sports Betting
The 2026 FIFA World Cup provided an important boost during July. The tournament featured numerous matches and attracted substantial betting interest throughout the month.
The World Cup also arrived during a traditionally quieter summer sports calendar. That helped create additional betting opportunities for US online sportsbooks operating in Michigan.
The state also entered July with a broad selection of regulated operators. The MGCB reported that 13 operators offered online sports betting during the month.
FanDuel remained a major force in Michigan's market. Meanwhile, operators continued competing for bettors through extensive sports markets and promotional offerings.
Michigan's broader digital gaming market also posted impressive results during July. Online casino gaming generated $302.8 million in gross receipts, substantially exceeding sports betting revenue.
The state's iGaming market also crossed $12 billion in lifetime gross revenue during July. That milestone highlights the importance of online casinos within Michigan's digital gaming ecosystem.
As a result, sports betting represents only one part of Michigan's expanding online gambling market. The strength of iGaming also provides operators with another major source of revenue throughout the year.
Can Michigan Continue the Momentum?
Michigan's July results provide an encouraging sign heading into the final months of summer. Still, sportsbooks face a tougher test as the betting calendar changes.
The World Cup concluded in July, removing one major source of wagering activity. However, the upcoming football season should provide a significant replacement.
College football and the NFL traditionally generate substantial betting interest across US markets. Therefore, Michigan sportsbooks could benefit as those seasons move into full swing.
At the same time, July's year-over-year handle growth provides a positive foundation. The market showed that wagering demand remains healthy despite seasonal changes.
For Michigan gambling operators, maintaining a strong hold will be crucial. If betting volume rises alongside favorable sportsbook results, revenue could gain further momentum in the coming months.
Meanwhile, Michigan's iGaming market should remain an important contributor to overall digital gambling revenue. Its July performance demonstrates that online casino gaming continues to anchor the state's digital market.
