Angels vs. Braves: The Braves have been pounding the ball into the ground, and tonight they face a team that thrives on turning two. The Angels lead all of baseball in double plays, and their matchup against a ground ball-heavy lineup sets up perfectly. Yup, that is right. We are backing the Angels to turn a double play this evening in Atlanta.
Los Angeles is one of the best teams in baseball at turning two, averaging 1.07 per game and 1.34 on the road—both marks rank first in the league.
Tonight they face a Braves lineup that has struggled with ground balls over the last few weeks. Atlanta ranks eighth-worst in ground ball percentage over the last 14 days and sixth-worst over the last seven. According to Batters-Box, five Braves hitters sit above the league average in ground ball rate for this matchup.
On the mound, Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi brings a 40% ground ball rate this season, averaging 6.2 ground balls per start. He has not been sharp on the road—opponents are hitting .277 and he carries a 4.47 ERA—but that is just fine here. We need traffic on the bases for this to cash. Overall, Kikuchi has a 1.37 WHIP this season.
