West Virginia vs. Kansas – September 20
A Big 12 clash that has my full attention in Week 4 features the West Virginia Mountaineers taking on the Kansas Jayhawks. These two programs enter off very different results. West Virginia is coming off a 31-24 overtime win over Pitt as seven point home underdogs, while Kansas is fresh off the Border War loss to Missouri on September 6. With a full week of rest and time to regroup from that tough setback, this matchup feels like a strong spot for the Jayhawks.
Line Movement
This line opened at 11.5 on Sunday morning, and I grabbed it right away. Since then it has pushed up to 13.5. If you like the Kansas side here, move quickly before it climbs further. I believe 13.5 is a very key number, and I would not feel comfortable holding a ticket beyond -14.
Kansas brings one of the most explosive offenses in the country, while West Virginia is still trying to find its footing with a new defensive unit. The Mountaineers have struggled in back to back weeks, allowing Ohio to rack up nearly 430 yards in a 17-10 loss, then giving up close to 350 yards to Pitt. They did tighten up against the run versus the Panthers, holding them to 46 yards, but still gave up over 300 yards through the air.
West Virginia Defense vs. Kansas Offense
Now West Virginia faces its toughest challenge yet. Kansas was limited to just 254 yards against Missouri, but that was against one of the nation's top defenses. Even then, the Jayhawks managed 31 points. Jalon Daniels has the arm talent, playmakers, and protection to exploit this West Virginia defense.
The Jayhawks defense has already been tested against quality opposition. Now it draws a Mountaineer offense that put up only 10 points against Ohio. Even if that was a look-ahead spot before Pitt, it is still a glaring concern.
Kansas has every edge in this matchup. They have the more explosive offense, the steadier quarterback play, and a defense that has already shown it can hold up against legitimate competition. West Virginia, meanwhile, has looked shaky on both sides of the ball, and while the Pitt win was a step forward, it does not erase the concerns from the Ohio loss.
The Jayhawks will push tempo, stretch the field, and force the Mountaineers to match them score for score, which is not their strength. At anything -14 or better, Kansas is the side worth backing in this spot.
PSA: To those reading this, please let the Mountaineers quarterback, my cousin Nicco Marchio-L, know that I am sorry.
