The 2023-24 season is winding down and every game is more important for teams trying to get into the playoffs. Tonight, we have 2 teams where 1 is fighting for their lives to get in and the other is just trying to protect their place in the playoffs.

We have the Nashville Predators (44-28-4) traveling to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders (34-27-15) at UBS Arena. Nashville is arguable one of the hottest teams in the league right now, after going 18 straight games earning at least 1 point.

The Predators pretty much have a Wild Card Spot in the Western Conference locked up. They're currently 6 points behind the 3rd seed in the Central Division but are in a Wild Card spot by 8 points.

New York on the other hand is fighting for their lives. They currently sit in the 3rd seed of the Metro Division as they got help last night with the Red Wings, Capitals and Flyers all losing.

Although the Islanders have 83 points and are in the 3rd seed of the Metro, they are in that place because they have the tie breaker over Philadelphia. Philly is in the 2nd Wild Card spot with Washington, Detroit and Pittsburgh on their tails.

Do the Islanders have what it takes to get the win vs the Predators?

This will be a tough task for the Islanders. Their lack of offense tends to bite them in the butt, but tonight they'll need their defense just as much.

Defensively, the Islanders rank in the bottom of the league for goals allowed and shots on goal allowed per game. They have a terrible penalty kill and commit almost the most penalties in the league.

You're probably chuckling after reading those stats and I don't blame you. If it's one thing I've learned about the Islanders, it's they win games they have no business winning, which could be the case tonight.

Call me a homer, but I have to back my boys tonight. They come in on a 3-game winning streak and have their eyes set on the playoffs, but there is no room for error.

I think we see a slow-paced game between these 2 teams. Both are going to want to be on their toes and not make any stupid mistakes.

With that in mind, I think the Isles benefit from the slower paced game. They need to strike while the irons hot, so dropping this game could be so bad for them. The standings are so tight in the Metro right now.

Expect guys like Bo Horvat and Mat Barzal step up again for the Islanders. They'll need to get the offense fired up and keep the vibes rolling.

There will be nothing easy or nice about this game for the Islanders. If they pull this off, it'll probably be in gross fashion, but hey – a wins a win.
