Although league officials concluded the conversation was intended as a joke, they removed the post and addressed the matter internally.

Although many fans viewed the exchange as harmless banter between friends, others argued the league should never have published content suggesting players were wagering on WNBA games. 

Critics noted that the post appeared to conflict with the same gambling standards the league regularly reinforces to its players.

WNBA Says the Post "Missed the Mark"

After deleting the video, the league released a statement explaining why it chose not to discipline either player while acknowledging the social media mistake.

"While the social media post was intended to be lighthearted, WNBA players are well aware of the league's policies prohibiting betting on WNBA games and receive training every year reinforcing those policies," the league's statement said. 

"We recognized that the post missed the mark, removed it shortly after it was published, and addressed the matter internally. We will also use this as an opportunity to reemphasize with the players involved that conversations about wagering on WNBA games, even when intended as a joke, can have negative consequences."

League officials determined the conversation lacked genuine gambling intent. As a result, the league opted for education instead of discipline while reminding players that even joking references to wagering can undermine public confidence.

Several media outlets agreed that no suspension was necessary. At the same time, they criticized the WNBA for creating the controversy by publishing the video on an official league account.

Section 5(c) of the WNBA CBA Leaves Little Room for Interpretation

The WNBA's gambling policy is not simply a league guideline. It is embedded in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Specifically, Section 5(c) prohibits players from betting on any WNBA game. It also bars players from participating in gambling activities involving league contests or providing inside information that could influence wagering markets.

Those provisions closely mirror integrity rules enforced by the NBA, NFL, MLB, and other major professional leagues. Every season, players receive mandatory education covering gambling regulations, suspicious approaches, and reporting requirements.

Because Section 5(c) clearly prohibits wagering on league games, the deleted video immediately drew scrutiny despite its playful tone. 

The league ultimately concluded the exchange did not represent an actual bet. However, the incident illustrated how easily public perception can collide with written league rules.
