<p>Since Justify became the 13<sup>th</sup> horse to win the <a href="/best-horse-racing-betting-sites/triple-crown/">Triple Crown</a> eight years ago, no horse has won both the <a href="/best-horse-racing-betting-sites/kentucky-derby/">Kentucky Derby</a> and <a href="/best-horse-racing-betting-sites/preakness-stakes/">Preakness Stakes</a>. That streak will continue into 2027, following the news that history-making Derby winner <strong>Golden Tempo</strong> will not race in the Preakness.</p>
<h2>Golden Tempo to Miss Preakness, Return for Belmont Stakes</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/horses/horse-racing/2026/05/06/golden-tempo-horse-kentucky-derby-winner-preakness-stakes-decision-cherie-devaux-laurel-park/89926881007/">In a statement released today</a>, trainer <strong>Cherie DeVaux</strong> revealed the decision to rest Golden Tempo for the Preakness, which will take place at <a href="https://horses.bettingnews.com/laurel-park">Laurel Park</a> on Saturday, May 16. Instead, the plan is for him to return for the <a href="https://horses.bettingnews.com/races/belmont-stakes">Belmont Stakes</a> on June 6.</p>
<p>At Churchill Downs, Golden Tempo, ridden by Jose Ortiz, came back from last place to defeat Renegade—ridden by Jose’s brother Irad Jr.—by a neck. That stunning comeback made DeVaux the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby, and for a few days, there was hope that a potential Triple Crown attempt was in the works.</p>
<p>That will not happen, but if he does run at <a href="https://horses.bettingnews.com/saratoga">Saratoga</a> next month, he will have a chance to become the 13<sup>th</sup> horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Most recently, <strong>Sovereignty</strong> did it last year, becoming the first horse since Thunder Gulch in 1995 to win just those two races.</p>
<p>Even before today’s news, Golden Tempo was not the Preakness Stakes favorite, according to <a href="https://affiliates.bettingnews.com/register/luckyrebel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lucky Rebel</a>, <a href="https://affiliates.bettingnews.com/register/betonline/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BetOnline</a>, and other sites that offer odds for the Triple Crown races and other notable horse races. He sat second behind <strong>Bob Baffert</strong>-trained <strong>Crude Velocity</strong>, who won the Pat Day Mile at <a href="https://horses.bettingnews.com/churchill-downs">Churchill Downs</a> on Derby Day.</p>
<p>With Golden Tempo out of the running, Crude Velocity is a firm favorite over <strong>Silent Tactic</strong> and <strong>Ocelli</strong>.</p>
