Angels vs. Astros (September 10): Ohtani aims to have Houston’s numbers yet again cover

mlb

After edging out the Los Angeles Angels last night, the Houston Astros have to deal with both Shohei Ohtani the pitcher and Shohei Ohtani the hitter for this evening's matchup at Minute Maid Park.

In last night's game in Houston, Mike Trout homered for the fifth straight game to give the Halos a 2-0 lead.

But the lead didn't stick, as the Astros scored one in the sixth, two in the seventh, and a valuable insurance run in the eighth then held on for a 4-3 victory.

Ohtani had only one hit in four at-bats last night, but he will be counted on to have an impact both at the plate and on the mound against the best team in the American League.

Ohtani's most recent start as a pitcher was last Saturday against Houston, and he was outstanding in a 2-1, 12-inning home win. In eight innings, he allowed six hits, one run, and no walks and struck out five.

In four starts against the Astros this season, Ohtani has put up some outstanding numbers.

Shohei Ohtani the Pitcher vs. the Houston Astros in 2022

  • 2-1, 1.09 ERA, 24.2 IP, 15 H, 3 R (3 ER), 0 HR, 4 BB, 38 K, .170 OBA, 0.77 WHIP

In his lone start at Minute Maid Park this season, he tossed six shutout innings, allowed just one hit and one walk, and struck out 12 in a 6-0 win on April 20.

Another strong start against the Astros is in the cards for tonight. The Astros have scored four or fewer runs nine times in their last 11 games, and they are hitting just .218 through seven games in September.

The Angels could use a little more production from him as a hitter against the Astros though. His numbers are not a pretty sight at all this season.

Shohei Ohtani the Hitter vs. the Astros in 2022

  • .200 BA (12 for 60), 3 2B, 3B, HR, 6 RBI, 5 R, 10 BB, 15 K, .314 OBP, .333 SLG

In 16 games against the Astros this season, Ohtani has just two multi-hit games. His numbers against Urquidy aren't encouraging either, as he is just 3 for 12 (.250) with a double, a homer, and two RBI against the righty.

Last night's game was the 11th time (in 17 games this season) that the Angels were held to three or fewer runs by the Astros, and today is likely to be the 12th.

In Urquidy's 25 starts this season, the opposition has totaled three or fewer runs 15 times, including eight times in his 11 home starts.

So, even with Ohtani having another excellent performance on the mound against the Astros, the home team is still worth backing here in a situation where they are a much smaller favorite than they often are.
