The Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees met for the first time of the year last night, where the visitors upset their hosts, winning 9-4. This gave the Guardians a 2.5 game lead over the Chicago White Sox in the terrible AL Central, while the Yankees are still a single game behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. There is still plenty of baseball left to be played this season, but both will want to keep themselves at or near the top of the standings. Jose Ramirez and the Guardians are looking for a second straight win on the road against the New York Yankees tonight
Both ball clubs are tossing out righties tonight, who have had very good seasons. Gavin Williams gets the nod for the Guardians and he brings an 8-3 record into tonight's contest. Williams is top 20 in the MLB in both ERA and WHIP this season, but admittedly his splits get a little worse away from home. Not drastically, but to the point where it is worth noting.
As for Gerrit Cole, he is shoving early on. Now, he's only made two starts this season, so it's an incredibly small sample size. But the man has yet to allow a run this year, has lasted at least six innings in both outings, and has 12 total strikeouts as well, just under one per inning. In his most recent start, Cole struck out 10 batters without a single walk, giving up just four hits in 6.2 scoreless innings. Will that continue tonight at home?

I don't hate backing the Yankees to cover the full game run line in this matchup, but I also lean with the under. Therefore, it doesn't make much sense to back them to win by two if there are only going to be five total runs scored (hypothetically). Instead, we will take the Yankees to start off hot, and earn at least one more run off of Williams than the Guardians do off Cole.
We saw nine of the 13 total runs scored within the first five innings last night, four of which came from New York. I have plenty of faith in the Yankees being able to rip against Williams. In his last road start, he pitched eight scoreless innings and allowed just five hits with 11 strikeouts against the Phillies. But in his two road starts prior to that, he allowed five runs to the Kansas City Royals and six to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Clearly this guy struggles away from home, and I think he is definitely due for some regression after winning three straight starts to end the month of May. Give me the Yankees to win the first five innings for us tonight.
