The Baltimore Orioles are in last place of the AL East with a 21-29 record, a full 13 games out of first place. Tonight they host the Detroit Tigers, who are in last place of the AL Central with a 20-31 record, sitting 9.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians. Spencer Torkelson and the Tigers need a win to stop the bleeding tonight in Baltimore
As I said, both of these teams are slumping heavily. The Detroit Tigers have now lost six in a row, and are just 7-19 away from Comerica Park this season. But at least they have been somewhat competitive, losing the last three games to the Guardians by just four total runs. The Orioles haven't been much better recently, losing three straight of their own to a division rival as well. They were much less competitive in their last series than Detroit.
However, today Jack Flaherty starts for the Tigers, and through 10 starts, he is still looking for his first win of the season. The Tiger are just 2-8 in games that he pitches, but he has yet to pick up a victory. Chris Bassitt hasn't been much better, but his home splits are very encouraging. I have no problem backing both offenses tonight, despite the lack of runs they have been producing recently. Chris Bassitt has great splits at home, where is ERA drops to 2.91, and his WHIP down to 1.46. However, the Tigers actually hit better against righties, and I think that could come into play tonight.
As for Mr. Flaherty, he's been bad, and I see it continuing tonight. On the road, his splits are relatively unchanged, but he's allowed 19 earned runs in his last 20.1 innings, for an ERA of 8.51. That's allowing at least two earned runs in his last five starts overall. I think at home, the Orioles can put up some runs.
Baltimore hits .233 overall and .236 against right handed pitchers. But at Camden Yards this year, that average improves to .245. Even though these teams are at the bottom of their divisions, I do not have any faith in their starting pitchers tonight.
