Happy Thursday, folks. Nothing like some day baseball, right?

Well, we've got plenty of it on the slate today, along with some solid action throughout the evening, so let's go ahead and dive into my MLB best bets and props for Thursday, May 14.

Mariners vs Yankees predictions, odds and MLB picks today

Seattle Mariners vs Houston Astros

It's confusing as to why the Seattle Mariners are favored in the fourth game of their series against the Houston Astros.

Sure, they've won two of the first three matchups, but their starting pitcher this afternoon does little to inspire confidence.

That's not something we've often said about veteran right-hander Luis Castillo, but the reality is he's nowhere close to the pitcher he once was.

A lot of Castillo's underlying numbers are downright atrocious, including a .364 BABIP, 52% hard-hit rate, 12% barrel rate and 1.62 WHIP. Additionally, his left-on-base percentage sits at just 59%, while his ground-ball rate is a low 34%.

He's allowed 15 earned runs on 18 hits over his last three outings, and against an above-average Astros offense, it's hard to envision those numbers improving.

As for Houston, the 26-year-old righty, Mike Burrows, is set to take the mound for the home team – and people may be confused as to why I don't share the same sentiment with his woes on the bump.

The reason being is because there is hope with Burrows. Despite his 5.04 ERA, his expected ERA shows him at 3.78, while his xFIP is at a fine mark of 4.06. He's also got a great hard-hit rate of 34% and barrel rate of just 6.6%.

The Mariners' offense has been solid over the past month, but this is a sneaky spot to fade them and grab some plus money with the Astros.

Chicago Cubs vs Atlanta Braves

MLB Odds for Today's Games cover Chris Sale Atlanta Braves

Like I talked about the other day, it's the most Chicago Cubs thing imaginable for them to put together multiple 10-game winning streaks, only to follow that up with a losing streak that's now reached four games.

And it doesn't look like things are going to get much better this evening, as the Cubs are set to face left-hander Chris Sale, who has been outstanding this season, which should surprise absolutely no one.

Sale is 6-2 through eight starts with a 2.20 ERA and 3.15 xFIP. He's also posting a .223 BABIP, 45% ground-ball rate, sub-.90 WHIP and 32% hard-hit rate.

Chicago has crushed left-handed pitching over the past month, leading the league in wRC+ at 146 against southpaws. However, during this losing streak, that number has plummeted to -100, which ranks dead last over this very short span. To be fair, the Cubs have logged only 19 plate appearances against lefties during that stretch, but the point remains: this offense is struggling right now, and that likely continues against one of the best pitchers in baseball.

On the flip side, right-hander Ben Brown gets the nod for the visitors. This will be just his second start of the season, but his 14th appearance overall.

His lone start came this past week in Texas, where he tossed four scoreless and hitless innings against the Rangers. Overall, Brown owns a 1.92 ERA, 3.24 xFIP, 52% ground-ball rate and 34% hard-hit rate.

Obviously those numbers are solid, but we still don't have a large sample size of what Brown can do pitching out of the gate, especially against a powerhouse like Atlanta.

Pretty simple here: fade the ice-cold Cubs and ride the hot hand of Sale and the Braves.

Chase Dollander Under 5.5 Strikeouts (-125)

In the earliest game of the day, with first pitch scheduled for 12:35 p.m. ET, the Pittsburgh Pirates host the Colorado Rockies in the rubber match of this three-game series.

My attention will be directed toward Colorado starter Chase Dollander, as I'll be taking him under 5.5 strikeouts this afternoon.

Over the past month, the Pirates have been fairly disciplined at the plate, posting a 20.6% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching, which ranks ninth in Major League Baseball. Even more recently, since the start of May, Pittsburgh owns the third-lowest strikeout rate against righties at just 18%.

Dollander has been a solid arm this season, recording 47 strikeouts through 43 innings of work. While he's made only two starts, he's also served as a long reliever and has pitched at least four innings in every outing. In those two starts, he struck out seven against the Mets and followed that up with five punchouts in Philadelphia.

Feels a bit gross to do so, but I'm going to trust the Pirates to keep Dollander's strikeout upside in check this afternoon.

Keider Montero Over 3.5 Strikeouts (-134)

Our other strikeout prop will bank on Tigers starter Keider Montero punching out at least four batters this afternoon.

Montero has been solid so far, averaging over 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings while walking fewer than two. He also owns a 3.18 ERA and 3.23 FIP.

He's averaging roughly four strikeouts per outing and has gone over 3.5 in four of his seven starts. So, why does he stand out today specifically?

Well, for starters, this prop is simply low. More importantly, though, he's facing a Mets lineup that hasn't been anything special at the plate this season.

Over the last month, New York ranks 16th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching at 21.7%. It's not a terrible mark, but it's enough to motivate me to back Montero's prop at such a low number.
