The Cubs white hot start to the season has come to a screeching halt, mainly due to the poor play of the bullpen.
The Chicago Cubs season started off great, winning 18 of their first 30 games this year and even at one point looking like a potential post-season team.The injury to Justine Steele was tough but this starting rotation has been playing amazing in his absence and still continue to play great.
The problem with the Cubs lies with the bullpen, last night's game being the perfect example. The Cubs lead 2-0 after 6 innings and 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th inning. They would go on to give up 4 runs in the bottom 9th, including a game winning 3-run homer to Brandon Lowe.
Starting pitcher Jameson Taillon pitched 6 stellar innings, recording 5 strikeouts, giving up just 4 hits and no runs. The Cubs bullpen sports a 4.47 ERA and they've given up the 5th most walks among all bullpens and 28 home runs on the season.
Today with Javier Assad on the mound for the Cubs, we're taking the bullpen out of it and we're rolling with the Cubbies F5 ML. He's got a 2.74 ERA and he's 4-2 through 13 starts. He's been a little bad over his L5 games but he's due for a bounce back.
Tampa Bay is currently batting just 0.224 against RHP this season and their starting pitcher Aaron Civale has been anything but stellar in his first full season as a Ray. He's got a 5.51 ERA this year and he's given up 28 hits, and 5 home runs in his last 25 innings of work.
Look for the Cubs to bounce back today after that heart breaking 9th inning loss last night in Tampa.
