The matchup for Super Bowl 58 is now set, and the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are set to face off today at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (6:30 pm ET, CBS). Since point spread odds for the game were released, the NFC champion 49ers have been favored, and unless some significant and unexpected injury news pops up in the next several hours, they will keep that status through to the game’s kickoff.
This season’s championship clash is a rematch of the title tilt four years ago, when the Chiefs and 49ers met at Hard Rock Stadium in south Florida.
In that matchup, the Chiefs were slightly favored, and with a 31-20 win, they captured the Lombardi Trophy and covered the spread.
Betting on the spread is one of the most popular ways to bet on the Super Bowl, and with such a mouthwatering matchup on the horizon, millions upon millions of bets on 49ers-Chiefs spread odds will be placed at both in-person sportsbooks and online sports betting sites.

Will the NFC Champion Be Favored in the Big Game for the Third Straight Year?
Each of the last two years, the NFC champion has been the Super Bowl betting favorite. Two years ago, the Los Angeles Rams were favored over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI (56). Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles were favored over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 57.
However, no favorite from the NFC has covered since the Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV in 2011.
And since the Rams were a two-touchdown favorite over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002, only five NFC teams have been favored in the big game:
- the Green Bay Packers over Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV,
- the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII against the Baltimore Ravens,
- the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos,
- the Rams last year against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI,
- the Eagles last year.
With Super Bowl 58 now just hours away, it looks like the 49ers will be added to that list, barring some wild line movement prior to kickoff.

Super Bowl Point Spread History
Did the Favored Eagles Cover Last Year?
In Super Bowl 57, the Eagles led by ten points at halftime. But the Chiefs turned the game around in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 24-11 in the final two quarters to take the win and their second Super Bowl title in four seasons.
Because they lost outright, the Eagles did not cover the spread.
All-Time Super Bowl Point Spread History
- Favorites vs. the Super Bowl Point Spread: 30-24-2 ATS
- Longest ATS Win Streak for Favorites: Five (Super Bowl V to Super Bowl IX)
- Longest ATS Win Streak for Underdogs: Four (Super Bowl XXXVI to Super Bowl XXXIX)
- Favorites Straight Up: 37-19 SU
- Longest SU Streak for Point Spread Favorites: Ten (Super Bowl V to Super Bowl XIV)
- Longest SU Streak for Spread Underdogs: Three (Super Bowl XLVI to Super Bowl XLVIII)
To date, only one Super Bowl matchup has closed as a pick’em. That occurred in Super Bowl XLVIII between the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.
And the game memorably came down to the waning moments, with the Patriots holding on for a 28-24 win when the Seahawks inexplicably threw the ball at the 1 instead of opting to hand the ball to Marshawn Lynch.
In the other 56 Super Bowls, favorites have a substantial edge in terms of Super Bowl moneyline wins. However, there is much less of a gap against the spread.
Recent Super Bowl Point Spread Results
2023 (SBLVII) – Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Spread: Eagles -1.5
Result: Chiefs 38, Eagles 35 (Super Bowl LVII Point Spread Result: Chiefs +1.5)
As mentioned above, the Eagles did not cover the spread in last year’s game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
2022 (SBLVI) – Los Angeles Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Spread: Rams -4.5
Result: Rams 23, Bengals 20 (Super Bowl LVI Point Spread Result: Bengals +4.5)
The Rams took a 13-3 lead early in the second quarter, but the Bengals scored 17 straight points across the second and third quarters to take a 20-13 lead. The Rams came back to win the title in their home stadium, scoring the decisive touchdown with 1:25 left in the game. However, they did not cover the point spread.
2021 (SBLV) – Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Spread: Chiefs -3
Result: Bucs 31, Chiefs 9 (Super Bowl LV Point Spread Result: Bucs +3)
Kansas City, who was seeking back-to-back Super Bowl wins, was favored at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. But the Bucs shut down Patrick Mahomes and dominated to make Super Bowl history.
The result of the big game wasn’t the only underdog win in Tampa. In a Super Bowl Gatorade color upset, blue Gatorade got the honor of drenching Bucs coach Bruce Arians for the celebratory shower.
2020 (SBLIV) – San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Spread: Chiefs -1
Result: Chiefs 31, 49ers 20 (Super Bowl LIV Point Spread Result: Chiefs -1)
Playing in their first Super Bowl in 50 years, the odds were slightly in Kansas City’s favor. But the 49ers were bound for their first title in 25 years until the Chiefs scored three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to overturn a 20-10 deficit.
Mahomes threw two interceptions but received Super Bowl MVP honors after leading the fourth-quarter rally.
2019 (SBLIII) – New England Patriots vs. Los Angeles Rams
Spread: Patriots -2.5
Result: Patriots 13, Rams 3 (Super Bowl LIII Point Spread Result: Patriots -2.5)
In the lowest-scoring Super Bowl of all time, the Patriots produced the game’s only touchdown in the fourth quarter on the way to capturing their sixth title and covering the Super Bowl point spread for just the second time in seven opportunities as a favorite. The less said about this game, the better.
Super Bowl Spread Trends
If the 49ers close as a favorite of three or fewer points, it will be the 18th time in Super Bowl history that someone has been favored by three or fewer points. In that scenario, spread favorites are 10-7 SU and ATS. However, the last two such favorites have failed to win, with the Eagles (-2) losing to the Chiefs (-3) last year and the Chiefs losing to the Bucs three years ago.
Teams that have been favored by two or fewer points are 3-2 SU and ATS:
- Super Bowl LVII (Kansas City vs Philadelphia): Chiefs defeated Eagles (-2) 38-35
- Super Bowl LIV (San Francisco vs Kansas City): Chiefs (-1.5) defeated 49ers 31-20
- Super Bowl XLVIII (Seattle vs Denver): Seahawks defeated Broncos (-2) 43-8
- Super Bowl XVI (San Francisco vs Cincinnati): 49ers (-1) defeated Bengals 26-21
- Super Bowl VII (Miami vs Washington): Dolphins (-1) defeated Washington 14-7
