Battle tonight on Long and Island and you know I'm excited! The Vancouver Canucks are in town to take on the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. This is the first of two matchups this season.
Vancouver is 13-17-3 this season and last in the Pacific Division. They come into this game on a two-game winning streak after a win on Tuesday over the Rangers. The Canucks are 4-5-1 in their last ten games and 9-7-2 on the road.
Rough year for the Canucks. They rank in the bottom of the league offensively in goals scored and shots on goal per game. Their offense is missing Elias Pettersson and Filip Chytil who are big pieces.
Not much better on defense statistically. Vancouver ranks in the bottom for goals allowed, shots on goal allowed and penalty kill. They commit just about five penalties per game, so they need to step up on that penalty kill.
Goaltender Thatcher Demko will be in net tonight. He has a 7-5-0 record with a 2.45 GAA and a .910 save percentage. Demko's numbers are decent, and the Islanders will look to give him his sixth loss of the season.

Islanders will try to get back in the win column tonight at home

New York Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin sits in net waiting for the puck drop.
The Islanders are 19-12-3 this year and third in the Metro Division. They come into this game off a loss to the Red Wings on Tuesday. New York is 6-3-1 in their last ten games and are 10-6-2 at home.
Last game was a shame and a game they should've won. Allowing three goals in the three period is unacceptable. It was a very low action game with not many shots, but it was almost like Sorokin got cold with the lack offense they face.
New York ranks towards the bottom of the league for goals scored but are eleventh in shots on goal per game. Their shooting percentage isn't very good and per usual, their power play stinks.
No real bright spots on defense other than finding ways to win. They rank ninth in goals allowed but eighteenth in shots on goal allowed. The Isles commit almost five penalties per game and kill off 82% of them, ranking eleventh.
In net, we're going to see Ilya Sorokin. He is 12-9-2 this season with a 2.52 GAA and .910 save percentage. Let's check out the odds and get into the Canucks vs. Islanders pick.

Vancouver Canucks vs. New York Islanders Picks and Prediction

Islanders forward Bo Horvat goes past Canucks forward Connor Garland with the puck.

This is a great bounce back spot for the Islanders at home. The Canucks are just coming off a shutout vs. the Rangers as well, so I could see the offense get blanked. This should also be a great spot for Sorokin vs. a weak offense as well.
The Islanders offense has been pretty decent. Guys will need to continue to step up with no Horvat, but the Canucks are leaky on defense. New York should and can take advantage of that by getting some early goals.
If Horvat was playing tonight, I'd be all over his plays. But the first play we're taking is going to be Ilya Sorokin for 23 or more saves for -115. The Islanders allow about 29 shots on goal per game while the Canucks average 27 shots on goal per game. The math is mathing here for me.
I honestly don't hate Demko for 24 or more shots for -135 either. Same math here – Isles are putting 28 shots a game while the Canucks are allowing that many per game. We should see 30 shots from the Islanders to clear this easy.
