Same game parlays have become one of the most popular ways to combine multiple bets into one wager. Instead of building a traditional parlay with selections from several different games, a same game parlay allows you to combine multiple betting outcomes from the same game or event.

Also known as SGPs, same game parlays can include everything from moneylines, point spreads, over/under bets to team, game, and player prop bets. Depending on the sport and sportsbook, bettors can have numerous potential combinations available for a single game.

However, not every betting market can necessarily be combined with every other market. Sportsbooks determine which selections are eligible for SGPs, and the combinations available can vary from one betting site to another.

In this guide, we will break down what same game parlays are, what you can and can't typically combine in an SGP, why they have become so popular, and what to consider before placing one.

What Are Same Game Parlays?

A same game parlay is a type of parlay bet that combines two or more selections from the same game or sporting event.

With a traditional parlay, you might combine the Kansas City Chiefs to cover the spread in their NFL matchup, the Boston Celtics to win their NBA matchup, and the Colorado Avalanche to win their NHL contest. Those selections come from three separate games, and all three must win for the parlay to cash.

A same game parlay applies the same basic concept to one game. For an NFL matchup, for example, you might combine the Chiefs to win, the game to go over the total, and Patrick Mahomes to throw two or more touchdown passes.

As with a traditional parlay, every leg generally needs to win for the wager to cash. Adding more legs can increase the potential payout, but every additional selection also gives the wager another way to lose.

One important difference between traditional parlays and SGPs is that selections from the same game can be related to one another.

For example, a quarterback going over his passing-yard total could increase the likelihood that one of his receivers also goes over his receiving-yard total. A high-scoring game could also make certain touchdown, yardage, or team scoring props more likely to hit.

This relationship between betting outcomes is known as correlation. Because the outcomes in an SGP aren't necessarily independent of one another, sportsbooks can account for those relationships when determining the odds for the entire wager.

What Bets Can You Combine in a Same Game Parlay?

The markets available for same game parlays vary by sportsbook, sport, game, and sometimes the individual betting market.

However, SGP builders can allow bettors to choose from a wide range of game, team, and player markets.

Common betting options that may be available for same game parlays include:

  • Moneylines
  • Point spreads
  • Game totals
  • Alternate spreads and totals
  • Team totals
  • First-half, first-quarter, and other period markets
  • Player props
  • Team props
  • Game props

The available combinations can vary significantly by sport.

For an NFL same game parlay, you might be able to combine a team to cover the spread, the game to go over the total, a quarterback to reach a certain passing-yard mark, and a player to score a touchdown.

An NBA SGP could include a team moneyline, a game total, and player props for points, rebounds, assists, or made three-pointers.

For an MLB game, potential legs could include the moneyline or run line, game total, and one or more hitter props or pitcher props. NHL bettors may be able to combine a moneyline or puck line with the game total, player shots on goal, an anytime goal scorer, and other available props.

SGPs aren't limited to professional leagues, either. Depending on the sportsbook, they can also incorporate college football picks, college basketball picks, WNBA picks, soccer picks, and other sports and competitions.

You also don't have to include a player prop. An SGP can be built around game and team markets, player markets, or a mixture of the two. That gives bettors a lot of flexibility when constructing a wager around how they expect a game to play out.

However, seeing a betting market listed for a game does not automatically mean you can include it in an SGP.

What Bets Can't You Combine in a Same Game Parlay?

Not every betting market can be combined in an SGP, and restrictions vary by sportsbook. Selections that may be blocked include:

  • Bets that directly contradict each other
  • Multiple versions of the same or overlapping market
  • Certain closely related outcomes
  • Markets that aren't eligible for SGP betting
  • Certain alternate or period markets
  • Markets that have been temporarily suspended

For example, you can't combine both teams to win the same game. Other restrictions may involve overlapping or closely related markets.

However, correlated bets aren't automatically excluded. Sportsbooks can account for correlation when pricing eligible SGP combinations.

Ultimately, your sportsbook's SGP builder will determine which bets you can combine, and a combination available at one betting site may not be available at another.

Why Are Same Game Parlays Worth Considering?

Same game parlays allow you to combine multiple predictions about one game into a single wager. You can build an SGP around how you expect the game to unfold while potentially getting a larger payout than you would from an individual straight bet.

The tradeoff is that every leg generally needs to win. Adding more selections can increase the potential payout, but it also gives the wager more ways to lose.

For that reason, avoid adding legs solely to make the payout larger. Same game parlays can be a fun and customizable way to bet on a matchup, but a bigger potential return doesn't necessarily make an SGP a better bet.
