Maine's sports betting market generated more than $450 million in wagers during the first nine months of 2026, despite a year-on-year decline in September. The state recorded $450.2 million in cumulative handle from January through September, representing a 10% increase over the same period in 2025.
According to reports from the Maine Gambling Control Unit (MGCU), bettors wagered approximately $61.05 million during September.
The results highlight continued growth across the state's regulated market, although monthly performance remains subject to fluctuations. Online operators continued to drive most activity, reinforcing the importance of digital platforms to the US online sportsbooks sector.
Maine Sports Betting Records $61 Million in September Wagers
The MGCU's September reports show that regulated sportsbooks accepted approximately $61.05 million in wagers.
However, this figure fell short of September 2025's handle of approximately $62.7 million. The decline contrasts with the market's 10% cumulative growth through September.
DraftKings, operating through its partnership with the Passamaquoddy Tribe, remained the largest contributor to Maine's betting handle. Its operation recorded approximately $50.83 million in September wagers.
Meanwhile, Caesars Sportsbook, operating through partnerships with the Penobscot, Maliseet and Micmac tribes, generated approximately $9.10 million.
Retail sportsbooks accounted for a much smaller share of activity. First Tracks Investments, which operates Oddfellahs in Portland, reported approximately $1.08 million in September wagers. Oxford Sportsbook recorded around $32,295 over the same period.
Together, these four reporting groups generated approximately $61.05 million in September handle. Their figures demonstrate the continued dominance of online wagering within Maine's regulated sports betting market.
Online Sportsbooks Drive Maine Gambling Activity
The September figures reinforce the importance of online wagering to Maine gambling. DraftKings and Caesars operate through partnerships with federally recognized tribal communities under the state's regulatory framework.
DraftKings accounted for the largest share of September's reported wagers, while Caesars maintained a substantial position in the market. Their combined handle reached approximately $59.93 million, representing nearly all wagering activity reported across the four groups.
By comparison, the two retail operations generated approximately $1.12 million in combined September handle. This gap highlights how strongly Maine's market depends on online betting rather than in-person wagering.
The figures also demonstrate why operator-level reports matter when assessing market performance. Aggregate handle reveals the market's overall size, while individual reports show which channels and partnerships contribute most to wagering activity.
September Revenue and State Tax Contributions
Although handle measures the amount customers wager, it does not represent sportsbook revenue. Operators calculate adjusted gross receipts after accounting for payouts, voided wagers, applicable adjustments and federal excise taxes.
Maine's September reports show approximately $6.34 million in combined adjusted gross receipts across the four reporting groups. The figures include approximately $5.42 million from the Passamaquoddy Tribe's operation and $801,400 from the Penobscot, Maliseet and Micmac tribal operation.
Additionally, First Tracks Investments reported approximately $110,907 in adjusted gross receipts. Oxford Sportsbook generated approximately $6,683.
Maine applies a 10% tax to adjusted gross sports wagering receipts. Based on the September reports, the four groups collectively owed approximately $634,222 in state tax.
These receipts help fund designated public programs, including gambling oversight, addiction prevention and treatment, and other statutory allocations.
Maine's Regulatory Framework and Market Outlook
The Maine Gambling Control Unit oversees sports wagering and publishes operator reports covering wagers, payouts, adjusted gross receipts and tax distributions. These reports provide a clearer picture of market activity than handle figures alone.
Maine's framework also distinguishes the state's market from jurisdictions that rely exclusively on commercial sportsbook licensing. Tribal partnerships support the operation of major online platforms, while licensed retail venues provide an additional wagering channel.
Looking ahead, Maine's full-year performance will depend on activity during the final quarter of 2026. The market has already recorded $450.2 million in handle through September, compared with approximately $601.9 million for the whole of 2025.
The nine-month total demonstrates continued expansion despite September's softer year-on-year result. As the US online sportsbooks market evolves, Maine's remaining monthly reports will show whether the state can approach or surpass its previous annual handle.
