American League Wild Card Drama: Expert Picks in the MLB Today

You've found my MLB expert picks for Wednesday, Sept. 30! Playoff baseball is officially here, and you can feel the intensity immediately. Every pitch matters in October—especially in a best-of-three Wild Card series, where one bad inning can flip an entire season.

MLB Expert Picks Today (Sept. 30)
The first bet is not a standard Game 2 moneyline play. Rather than laying a bigger price on Houston at home with Hunter Brown on the mound, I'm taking the Astros to rally from their Game 1 loss and win the series at a much better number.
The second bet is much more straightforward. I like the Yankees to finish the job against Boston with Fried taking the ball at Yankee Stadium.

The White Sox took a commanding 1-0 series lead after beating Houston 6-3 in Game 1. It was a huge win for Chicago, and now the Astros are in the uncomfortable position of having to win back-to-back games just to keep their season alive.
But this is exactly why I'm not betting Houston straight up in Game 2.
The Astros are a heavy favorite with Hunter Brown taking the ball against Sean Burke. Brown is Houston's ace, he's pitching at home, and he's been rolling. But instead of laying that inflated Game 2 price, I'd rather take the series price at +200 and bet on Brown giving Houston the outing it needs to survive.
Brown can absolutely shove here.
He ranks in the 83rd percentile in strikeout rate and the 97th percentile in ground-ball rate, according to Baseball Savant. That combination is nasty in a playoff setting. He misses bats when he needs the strikeout, and when hitters do make contact, they're pounding the ball into the ground.
Brown also limits hard contact well. He does hand out a few more free passes than I'd like, which is the biggest concern here, but he has been excellent overall. Since the All-Star break, he owns a 3.00 ERA and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts.
Burke has been solid for the White Sox this season. He's not some automatic fade, and Chicago already proved it can score against Houston. But we've also seen Burke get blown up a couple of times, and that's the difference in this matchup for me. Brown has the higher ceiling, more swing-and-miss ability, and the kind of ground-ball profile that can erase a threat with one double-play ball.
Obviously, it helps that the Astros are at home. The Astros did use a bullpen game in Game 1, which I don't love. But if Brown gives Houston the dominant start I expect, it sets the club up nicely for a potential Game 3 at Daikin Park.
Give me Houston to rally and win the Wild Card series.
Red Sox vs. Yankees Expert Pick for Wednesday
New York took Game 1, and I loved what I saw from the lineup. The biggest takeaway was not just that the Yankees won. It was that the entire order contributed.
We know the Yankees have their stars. We know what Ben Rice is capable of when he's clicking. But in a short playoff series, it's huge when the lesser-known players and role guys are also confident, producing, and keeping the lineup moving. That was the case in Game 1.

Sonny Gray has been spectacular this season. He deserves that respect, and I'm not going to pretend this is an easy matchup just because the Yankees won Game 1. However, Max Fried has been excellent when healthy, and I like the overall situation for New York.
The Yankees didn't have to burn through their highest-leverage bullpen options in Game 1. That matters in a short series. If Fried gets into trouble early, Aaron Boone should have his best relievers ready to go. There's no reason to get cute when the Red Sox are one loss away from elimination.
Boston also limped into the playoffs offensively.
The Red Sox ranked near the bottom of the league in virtually every major offensive category during September. Gray can absolutely keep them in this game, and the Red Sox are capable of making things uncomfortable.
But Fried doesn't need to be perfect. He just needs to give New York a solid start, get the game to the bullpen in good shape, and let an offense that is currently rolling do the rest. The Yankees are laying a little juice, but I'm fine with it.
