Main Event: Joshua Van (C) vs Alexandre Pantoja Preview – Flyweight Championship

A Rematch For The Flyweight Belt After The First Ended In Controversy
The rematch for Flyweight Gold is set for the Main Event at UFC 331 in Los Angeles. Joshua Van will look to defend his belt for the second time when he takes on the man he won it from in the first place.
Alexandre Pantoja has been out of action for the past 10 months due to the dislocated elbow he suffered in the first match up. The former flyweight champion attempted to start the bout off with a bang when tragedy happened.
During a quick head kick attempt, Van caught the kick and threw Pantoja back with Pantoja using his arms to break his fall. The fall lead to the dislocation, ending everyone's night early and bringing high controversy to Vans win.
At the time, the injury could not have come at a worse time in his career. The aging Veteran was on a 8 fight winning streak including 4 consecutive title defenses.
There is no doubt Pantoja was surely on his way to cement his name among the Flyweight GOATS. Additionally, the injury came at 35 years old putting him out for almost a whole year in the prime of his career.
Now Pantoja is showing up at 36 years old, rusty, and coming off a major injury. All of these can come at a great disadvantage when taking on a rising superstar like Joshua Van.
Pantoja is a relentless grappler, shooting take down after takedown until successful. Once he has his opponent on the ground, his submission skills are some of the best the Flyweight division has ever seen.
Unfortunately his striking defense is poor and he often uses his durability to his benefit when he does have to strike. The chin of Pantoja is some what legendary at this point but at 36 years old, Father time is undefeated.
Make no mistake though, his striking offense is much better holding massive power in his hands when he does land. A 12 year age gap separates the fighters, which also may add a big speed disadvantage for Pantoja.
Joshua Van is a tough night out for anyone in the Flyweight division, especially an aging veteran. To make matters worse for Pantoja, Van excels in the areas that Pantoja has always struggled with.
This fact makes the match up ever more interesting with Van being such a good boxer in the pocket. Van does very well in chaotic striking exchanges often getting the better of his opponents.
Despite being only being 24 years old, Van already has put together an impressive resume. The activity speaks volumes by appearing in 11 UFC bouts in just 3 short years.
Van has made huge strides in his game in just a short period of time due to his octagon experience. This experience was not all great as the prospect has gone 10-1 on his run.
The lone loss came at the hands of fellow veteran Charles Johnson. Van cruised in the bout, easily winning the first 2 rounds before a costly mistake that led to him being knocked out.
The veteran lesson proved to be a learning experience for Van as he has since gone 7-0. The winning streak includes winning the title and even defending it over another top prospect in Tatsuro Taira.
Many MMA fans across the globe are highly anticipating the rematch of Van & Pantoja due to the ending of the first bout. This is a perfect opportunity for both fighters to prove their legacy and answer many questions fans have.
