Main Event: Manel Kape vs Kyoji Horiguchi Preview – Flyweight

The Main Event Marks A Rematch 9 Years In The Making
The highly anticipated Main Event of UFC Vegas 119 features a rematch 9 years in the making. Manel Kape will take on Kyoji Horiguchi in a 5 round bout under the UFC banner.
The first match up came in the Rizin promotion in 2017 when both fighters were just upcoming prospects. Horiguchi got the better of the match up coming back after being dropped early to submit Kape in the 3rd round of the bout.
There is no doubt both fighters have grown to be entirely different fighters since the match. Now, more complete well rounded contenders in the flyweight division.
Horiguchi resigned with the UFC in 2025 after stepping away from the promotion in 2016. The prospect chose to fight in Rizin on the other side of the world, much closer to his home country of Japan.
In his first stint with the UFC he went on an impressive run with a record of 7-1. On the run his lone loss came at the ends of Flyweight GOAT Demetrius Johnson with a buzzer – beater submission finish.
Horiguchi went on to have an impressive career in Rizin becoming a 3x champion in the promotion. His resume certainly speaks for itself, fighting some of the best the flyweight division has to offer over the years.
Since signing back to the UFC Horiguchi has proved he is one of the top Flyweights in the world. With back to back top 10 wins over Tagir Ulanbekov and Amir Albazi.
It certainly seems as if Horiguchi is 1 big win away from a title shot even at 35 years old. A rematch with Manel Kape, who is undoubtedly the #1 contender of the division only makes sense at this point.
Will Kape Finally Earn His Title Shot?
Horiguchi is just 3 years older then his peer Manel Kape, which may have helped in the first match up. In the rematch, it may prove to be a detriment as Kape is now the much faster striker in the match up.
Manel Kape has been on an incredibly impressive run as of late. He has established himself as the #1 contender with massive wins like Brandon Royval, Asu Almabayev, and Bruno Silva.
The streak includes winning all 3 by knock out, a rare case in the Flyweight division. Unfortunately it seems as if Kape has been skipped over for multiple title shots now.
It may have something to do with the fact that Kape can not get out of his own way. Kape has 4 cancelled bouts in the past 2 years, with 3 coming by his own doing.
The prospect missed weight and had his bout cancelled against Matheus Nicolau in 2024 which certainly tainted his run. Not to mention being so close to a title shot in 2025 but being forced to pull out of his match up with Royval due to foot injury.
He was able to come back and fight Royval in December, but by then the title shot had passed him by. As we sit, the #1 contender spot at Flyweight remains vacant for as long as Pantoja sits out.
This match up with Horiguchi is a perfect opportunity for Kape to prove he is next in line for the title. The fact it is a rematch of a previous loss, makes a win that much sweeter for the slick striker Manel Kape.
