This BIG 12 storylines were dominated this offseason by Brendan Sorsby and Texas Tech. Now that is seems like all of that is behind us we are less than three weeks away from the start of Week 0.
Even without Sorsby, the Red Raiders are heavy favorites to win the conference. BYU, Utah, Houston, and Kansas State are expected to be in the mix as well. If you follow College Football you know this conference is the one that tends to be the most unpredictable. Texas Tech on paper should win the league, but in reality there could be like 10 different teams that have a shot at winning the BIG 12.
Make sure you check out Nate Hornung's preview of the BIG 12 and his favorite win total for the conference.

BIG 12 Win Total #1: Kansas State Over 8.5 Wins (+100) – BetOnline

Avery Johnson runs it back at Kansas State, this time with Collin Klein as his Head Coach
Initially, when I was doing research on Kansas State I didn't want anything to do with this team. Avery Johnson was coming back for his senior season as QB and I didn't want to live through that experience again. This kid was supposed to be the next big thing in Manhattan, Kansas and it just hasn't translated. He is a terrific athlete, but hasn't been able to develop as a passer.
Why would I want to bet on Kansas State to win more than 9 games then? The answer – Colin Klein. The former K-State QB is back and this time as the head coach, taking over for Chris Klieman. Klein did a terrific job as the offensive Coordinator working with Marcel Reid at Texas A&M. Reid has a very similar skillset to Avery Johnson. Both are electric athletes with blazing speed. Klein did a heck of a job with Reid and I think he can do the same in the development of Johnson.
If Klieman was back as Head Coach for K-State and it was the same coaching staff I would have no interest, but I think now there is huge upside on Avery this year and he could finally turn into that QB that a lot of people thought he would be. You combine that with the fact they don't have Texas Tech, Utah, or BYU on the schedule and I think they win 9+ games this year. I also bet them to win the BIG 12 at 18-1 and make the CFB playoff.
BIG 12 Win Total #2: Utah Under 8.5 Wins (+110) – BetOnline

Can Utah maintain a consistent program without Kyle Whittingham?
For the last 15 years Utah has been one of the most consistent programs in the country. Kyle Whittingham did a terrific job in Salt Lake City building the Utes into a monster. They were always a team to watch in the PAC 12 and have been favorites in their first two season in the BIG 12. Things haven't gone Utah's way the last few years and now for the first time in a while they lose their Head Coach. Morgan Scalley, the longtime defensive coordinator takes over as head coach and we all have no idea what to expect.
Even though on paper Utah has a solid roster yet again, their bread and butter is always the line of scrimmage. They usually are terrific on the offensive and defensive line. They lose a lot of really quality players in those position groups and even though they have some solid replacements coming in they should drop off in production. Jim Harding followed Kyle Whittingham to Ann Arbor to be the Michigan O-line coach. So not only do you lose quality players, you lose both the coaches as well.
The QB Devon Dampier is back for the Utes and he was solid last year, but I don't think he took Utah to the next level offensively like people thought he would. The schedule is pretty favorable with no Texas Tech and getting BYU and Houston at home. They do have roadtrips to TCU and Arizona though which will be tough.
9-3 would be a heck of a first year for Morgan Scalley. I just think there is a lot more that can go wrong that can go right for Utah with a first year head coach and 9 wins is a big ask. At plus money I'll take the under 8.5.
BIG 12 Win Total #2: Iowa State Under 4.5 Wins (+115) – BetOnline

Jimmy Rogers becomes Iowa State's new Head Coach
It could be a long year for Cyclones fans. After 10 years of Matt Campbell at Iowa State, he moves on to take the Penn State job and takes his QB Rocco Becht with him and a slew of other players. In this era of college football when a coach moves on for another job there tends to be an overhaul of the roster and that is definitely the case with Iowa State.
Jimmy Rogers has a good track record. He led South Dakota State to an FCS Title in 2023 and did a nice job in one year at Washington State. Taking a power 4 job is a different animal though and he is going to have one of the worst rosters in the conference. When a win total is this low it's usually low for good reason.
The Cyclones play Southeast Missouri State and Bowling Green at home which should be two wins. Outside of that nothing is a guarantee. They play at Iowa which likely is a loss and then would need to win 3 conference games to go over the win total. I just don't see it. I like Under 4.5 wins and I like the price at +115.
