College Football Playoff Bracket Projections for This Season

The College Football Playoff bracket is not set until Selection Day, but projected fields can help bettors follow the postseason race throughout the regular season.

Several outlets regularly publish CFP projections. ESPN, CBS Sports, On3, and The Sporting News provide projected fields, seeds, matchups, and analysis as the playoff picture changes.

ESPN also offers the Allstate Playoff Predictor, which takes a more model-driven approach by estimating teams' chances of reaching the CFP as the season develops.

Once the selection committee begins releasing its rankings in November, the official College Football Playoff rankings become the most important reference point. They show how the committee views the contenders and provide useful context for evaluating bracket projections.

No single projection should be treated as definitive. Comparing several sources can be especially useful when there is disagreement about teams near the playoff cut line or the order of the top seeds.

Bet on the College Football Playoff at the Top College Football Betting Sites

The College Football Playoff is one of the biggest betting events on the college sports calendar, and top sportsbooks provide extensive coverage throughout the postseason.

Along with odds on all 11 CFP games, bettors can find national championship futures, player and team props, parlays, same-game parlays, live betting markets, and other wagering opportunities.

Odds and betting markets can differ between sportsbooks, making it beneficial to have accounts with multiple college football betting sites. Comparing books can help you find a better price, a more favorable point spread, or a prop that may not be available elsewhere.

The four first-round matchups will be announced on Selection Day on December 6. Betting News will update this section with the complete CFP bracket, matchups, game times, odds, and results as the postseason unfolds.

College Football Playoff Format

The College Football Playoff features 12 teams competing in a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion.

The top four seeds receive first-round byes and advance directly to the quarterfinals. Seeds No. 5 through No. 12 compete in four first-round games, with the higher-seeded team hosting on campus.

College Football Playoff Rounds

Round Teams Description
First Round 8 Seeds 5-12 compete at campus sites hosted by the higher seed.
Quarterfinals 8 Seeds 1-4 enter the playoff and face first-round winners.
Semifinals 4 Quarterfinal winners compete at two neutral-site bowl games.
National Championship 2 Semifinal winners meet for the national championship.

How College Football Playoff Seeding Works

The four highest-ranked teams in the final CFP rankings receive seeds No. 1 through No. 4 and first-round byes. The remaining playoff teams are then seeded based on the final rankings, subject to the placement of any automatic qualifiers that finish outside the top 12.

If an automatic qualifier is ranked outside the top 12, it will be placed at the bottom of the 12-team playoff seeding. If multiple automatic qualifiers fall outside the top 12, the selection committee determines their relative order and places them at the bottom of the field.

The first-round matchups are No. 5 vs. No. 12, No. 6 vs. No. 11, No. 7 vs. No. 10, and No. 8 vs. No. 9. Seeds No. 5 through No. 8 host the opening-round games.

Beginning with the 2026-27 CFP, the No. 1 seed selects its quarterfinal bowl and the semifinal site it would advance to with a quarterfinal win. The No. 2 seed then chooses from the remaining quarterfinal bowl sites, followed by the No. 3 seed. The No. 4 seed is assigned to the remaining quarterfinal.

The bracket remains fixed once it is announced. Teams are not re-seeded after each round, and the selection committee does not alter matchups to avoid regular-season rematches or games between teams from the same conference.

How Are College Football Playoff Teams Selected?

Unlike professional sports leagues, where postseason qualification is determined entirely by standings and tiebreakers, the College Football Playoff field is selected by a committee.

The CFP selection committee releases rankings during the second half of the season before determining the final 12-team field on Selection Day.

Automatic bids are awarded to the champions of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC, along with the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, or Sun Belt. The remaining places are filled by the highest-ranked eligible at-large teams.

Notre Dame also receives a guaranteed playoff berth if it finishes among the top 12 teams in the final CFP rankings.

The selection committee evaluates teams using several factors. Strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, results against common opponents, conference championships, and overall performance can all help separate teams with comparable resumes.

Results in major college football rivalry games can also have significant implications for the playoff race, particularly when conference titles and postseason berths are on the line.

That makes the playoff race about more than a team's win-loss record. Two teams with identical records may have very different resumes depending on who they played and how they performed against their strongest opponents.

The first CFP rankings reveal of the 2026 season will take place on November 3, with subsequent rankings providing an increasingly clear picture of the teams in contention. The final rankings and 12-team bracket will be announced on Selection Day on December 6.

College Football Playoff Betting Strategies & Tips

Betting on the College Football Playoff can involve much more than wagering on individual postseason games. Sportsbooks offer national championship futures throughout the year, markets on which teams will make the CFP during the regular season, and additional playoff futures after the release of the bracket.

The best approach can depend on both the market you are betting and when you are placing your wager.

Types of College Football Playoff Bets

College Football Playoff betting markets evolve throughout the season. National championship futures are available well before the CFP begins, while sportsbooks may also offer odds on whether individual teams will make the 12-team playoff.

Once the bracket is announced, additional futures and playoff-specific markets may become available. Depending on the sportsbook, you may be able to bet on teams to reach a particular round, advance to the national championship, or achieve other postseason outcomes.

Each of the 11 CFP games also features many of the same betting options available throughout the college football season. If you are new to those types of wagers, we have several guides dedicated to the main types of CFP and college football bets.

Our College Football Betting Guide also covers these common wager types with additional nuance. Below, we'll focus on the strategies and considerations that are particularly relevant when betting CFP futures and individual playoff games.

Betting on College Football Playoff Futures

CFP futures change throughout the season. Before and during the regular season, bettors can wager on teams to win the national championship or make the playoff. Once the field is set, additional markets may become available based on how far teams advance.

Understanding what a team must accomplish for your bet to win is an important part of evaluating these markets.

National Championship and CFP Qualification Futures

Winning the national championship and making the College Football Playoff are very different goals, so the better market may depend on what you expect from a team.

For a national championship future, consider whether the team has the talent, depth, and potential postseason path to beat multiple elite opponents. For CFP qualification, focus more on its path to one of the 12 available spots.

Schedule difficulty, conference strength, tiebreakers, and the path to a conference championship can all affect a team's chances. Following a weekly college football betting checklist can help you stay on top of upcoming matchups, changing odds, and other developments that may influence the playoff race. The expanded playoff also gives many contenders some margin for error, so one loss does not necessarily end a team's CFP hopes.

Compare that path with the available price. A team with a favorable schedule may have several realistic ways to reach the playoff, while another contender may face a much more difficult route.

A team can also offer value in one market but not the other. If you believe it is likely to make the CFP but unlikely to win several postseason games, a qualification bet may better reflect your expectations than a national championship future.

Betting on the CFP After the Bracket Is Announced

Once the bracket is announced, you know each team's seed, opening matchup, first-round bye or home game, and potential path to the national championship.

A team with a first-round bye needs three wins to capture the title, while a team playing in the opening round needs four. But the highest seed does not necessarily have the easiest path, as matchups elsewhere in the bracket can create very different routes.

Sportsbooks may also offer markets on teams to reach particular rounds or make the national championship game. If you like a team's path but are not convinced it can win the title, an advancement market may better reflect your outlook.

Compare the potential return with what the team must accomplish. Two similarly seeded teams can have very different paths based on their opening opponents and possible later-round matchups.

Reassess Futures as the CFP Progresses

Futures prices change after each playoff round as teams are eliminated and the remaining paths become clearer.

A team that offered value before the CFP may not offer the same value after its odds shorten. Before adding another position, consider both the new price and what remains of its path through the bracket.

Existing futures can also create other options. Depending on the odds and upcoming matchups, you may let a favorable ticket ride, add another position, or hedge your bet to reduce risk or secure a return.

Because futures prices can differ between sportsbooks, line shopping remains useful. Even when books agree on the leading contenders, prices on individual teams and advancement markets can vary.

Betting on College Football Playoff Games

Individual CFP games are still college football games, so the fundamentals of handicapping college football games don't suddenly change when the postseason begins. Rather than treating CFP games like another regular-season Saturday, however, consider the circumstances created by the playoff's format, locations, schedule, and increased betting attention.

Account for the CFP Round, Location, and Conditions

The first round is unique because the higher-seeded teams host games on their campuses. Home-field advantage can be especially significant when a visiting team enters an unfamiliar environment for a win-or-go-home game.

December campus games also introduce conditions that don't exist in the neutral-site rounds. Cold temperatures, wind, rain, or snow can influence passing, kicking, scoring, and player props, making weather forecasts and conditions worth monitoring as kickoff approaches. This can be particularly notable when a warm-weather team travels to play in conditions it rarely encounters.

Beginning with the quarterfinals, the CFP moves to neutral sites. However, "neutral" does not necessarily mean both teams will have equal support or identical travel demands. Geography, fan turnout, travel distance, and familiarity with the region can make some neutral-site environments more favorable to one team.

Preparation and recovery also change by round. Teams receiving first-round byes have additional time to prepare and recover, while their quarterfinal opponents enter after already playing a postseason game. As the playoff progresses, consider each team's turnaround, travel demands, and recovery time rather than treating every round the same.

Evaluate the Betting Market Around Each CFP Game

CFP games attract significant betting interest and generally provide bettors and sportsbooks with more time to evaluate matchups than a typical regular-season game.

Pay attention to opening numbers and subsequent line movement rather than focusing only on the spread or total available when you happen to check the game. A move can change the attractiveness of a wager, particularly when a point spread crosses an important football number.

The extended buildup to some CFP games also gives new information time to emerge. Player availability and weather forecasts can change between the opening line and kickoff, while betting action itself can be impactful.

There is no universal rule that says betting immediately or waiting until game day will produce the best number. Understanding when to place your bets can help you determine whether an opening line is worth taking or whether there is a reason to wait.

Whatever your timing, compare the available odds before placing your wager. A difference such as -6.5 instead of -7 or a better moneyline price may seem small on a single bet, but consistently finding the better number can make a meaningful difference over time.

College Football Playoff History

The College Football Playoff began in the 2014 season, replacing the Bowl Championship Series. The original four-team format featured two national semifinals and a championship game and remained in place through the 2023 season.

The CFP expanded to 12 teams beginning with the 2024 season, introducing first-round games at campus sites and increasing the postseason from three games to 11.

Ohio State became the first champion of the expanded format, winning the 2024 title as the No. 8 seed, while Indiana followed by winning last season's national championship (and the program's very first) as the No. 1 seed, led by Heisman Trophy winner and 2026 NFL Draft top pick Fernando Mendoza.
