NCAA Football Expert Insights: #6 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. #14 Tennessee Volunteers
Keelon Russell and the Crimson Tide take on the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville this Saturday
The Crimson Tide suffered their first loss of the season to the Georgia Bulldogs last week, who are now the undisputed No. 1 team in the country. Will Alabama be able to pick themselves back up and face a hungry Volunteers team? Tennessee has only lost to Texas this year, covering the spread in a three point loss at home. In that game, they missed Faizon Brandon for an extended amount of time.
Whether or not Brandon or George MacIntyre leads the Volunteers offense, I see them struggling to score. The offense hasn't been all that this year, and we know Alabama's defense can be very stingy. However I will admit, I am VERY impressed with the defensive side of the ball for Tennessee. I see them leaning on that unit to help keep this game close against one of the highest scoring offenses in all of college football.
Matchup Information – Alabama vs. Tennessee – October 17
Full transparency as always, I was able to book this at under 52.5 for (-116). Yes, taking an under in a game involving Alabama isn't the smartest move. The offense has been scoring a ton, but so far, teams have failed to put up points against the Volunteers. They have only allowed 20 points twice: to Texas in a loss where they covered, and against Georgia Tech, in a 21 point win. Ultimately, Tennessee will trust their defense to keep this game competitive, as they should know a shootout does not help them at all.
This game feels eerily similar to when Texas came to Neyland. They were about a touchdown favorite, and could never break away to cover because of the Vols' defense. Sure, Alabama's offense is probably more potent, but we know this is a tough place to play. History says so.
So far this season, Tennessee's defense ranks top 15 in yards per play allowed, and top 16 in points per game allowed. They do not allow much production from their opponents, and I think they will make it hard for Keelon Russell to find any rhythm on offense. Give me a low scoring game that the Volunteers cover, and possibly win outright.
