Today it begins. Soccer fans have waited four long years for the FIFA World Cup to return, and it is finally here. The 2026 World Cup will be played across North America, but this afternoon's opener is happening in Mexico City, as the host nation takes on South Africa. Tomorrow, both Canada and the United States begin their campaigns, but tonight we have Group A taking over our screens. Mexico is the betting favorite to win the group and this match. Can South Africa compete in their first World Cup match since hosting in 2010?

Mexico vs. South Africa FIFA World Cup Betting Insights

Oswin Appollis had two goals and four assists for South Africa in the World Cup Qualifiers
This is the opening match of the World Cup. Mexico, one of our host nations, kicks things off in their capital. The narratives are all in favor of El Tri, and I won't be fading them. Mexico is the clear favorite to win this group for a reason, and South Africa has not played in a World Cup game in 16 years. Sure, that could mean they are extra motivated, but talent wise, they can't compete in this group.
Mexico comes into this tournament ranked No. 16 in the entire world, while South Africa is No. 60. Clearly there is a large gap between these two teams, and I do not see the South Africans competing on opening night.

Guillermo Ochoa is rock solid between the posts for Mexico, and has been for quite some time

We are taking Mexico to win with an inflated under. I have no faith in South Africa's attack against this Mexican defense. Last summer, Mexico allowed just three total goals across six Concacaf Gold Cup matches as they won the entire tournament. Mexico also allowed just one goal in four Concacaf Nations League matches, as they went on to win the whole thing. They have no problem squeezing out disgustingly low scoring wins, and with the entire country behind them in this opener against the worst team in the group, they should get the job done.
This is a tone setting match. Mexico needs to come out with some fire early on, getting the entire country behind them and ready to support. Knowing this is going to be their "easiest" match in group stage, they should understand the urgency that comes with it. You cannot afford to give away points against the weakest team in the group, therefore, leave no doubt on the pitch.
I see Mexico scoring very early on and letting their legs rest as they prepare for the rest of their group stage matches.
Prediction: Mexico Wins 2-0 (+475)
