The Big 12 brings us some ranked on ranked action during the opening window on Saturday, as the No. 22 Arizona Wildcats head to Lubbock to take on the No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders. Both teams sit at 6-1 on the year, and 2-1 in conference play, but they come into this game in very different situations. Can Arizona walk into Lubbock and pull off this upset? I doubt it. But let's get into our favorite picks as two of the best in the Big 12 go head to head.
NCAA Football Expert Insights: #22 Arizona Wildcats vs. #13 Texas Tech Red Raiders
Noah Fifita has Arizona off to a 6-1 start this year, losing only to BYU on the road in Week 2
After losing to BYU in Week 2 of the CFB season, the Arizona Wildcats have now won five straight games. However, as we know, not all wins are equal. The Wildcats have knocked off Northern Arizona, Northern Illinois, Washington State, Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Iowa State. The Huskies and Cougars have a combined record of 1-15 this year. Not too impressive.
But, but, but… the Wildcats beat Cincinnati 34-7, and the Red Raiders lost to that team 34-27 just last week. Indeed, my dear reader. But Arizona played the Bearcats in Tucson, while Texas Tech had to go to Nippert Stadium, where we know things get weird. I think this road matchup will be tough for Arizona, considering they already failed to cover a spread in their other ranked road matchup this year.
Matchup Information – Arizona vs. Texas Tech – October 31
Full transparency, I booked the flat three at -120 earlier this week, but I have no problem betting this hook. I think the Red Raiders blow this team outta the water. They are coming off an ugly loss, looking to bounce back. After that loss, they cannot afford to look ahead, but the Mountaineers coming to town isn't worth it anyways.
At this point, the Red Raiders might need perfection to sneak into the Big 12 Championship, and possibly the College Football Playoff. I expect them to play close to that level of football this weekend at home. While neither team is all that "battle tested", I certainly side with the hosts, and even have their moneyline in a parlay as well.
With so much at stake in this game, and every matchup going forward for the Red Raiders, there is no room for a slip up. If this team wants to go back to the CFP, they will need to win every game from here on out. They cannot leave any doubt, and I am betting on them running up this score on the Wildcats at home to start our Saturday. We will find out if Arizona is legit this weekend on the road, and I'm betting on them being exposed.
